The 29.99% Interest Rate Didn't Matter

By Richard LeDue

Groceries bought with a credit
card aren't very poetic:
the frozen chicken burgers
starting to thaw
in the cart,
while we wandered
up aisles,
accepting this was the kind of
date we could afford
at the time
and calling this a love poem
will upset some,
who never made faces
while being lectured by a bill
collector over the phone,
or lied to friends about weekend plans
just to have rabbit eared Saturday nights
watching TV shows through static
together
because the cable was disconnected again.
