To the skeptic who raises the eyebrows in disbelief, questioning the rationale behind embarking on creating a literary journal, I would say, no better time than the present. If not now, then when? Just now, we find ourselves in a world defined by fear and uncertainty caused by a pandemic; a world struggling to find its path to racial justice; a world in which the core values of decency and compassion are frequently challenged and our notions of freedom, equity, and democracy are turned upside-down. What better time to create a venue for prose and poetry that give us compelling insights and remarkable artistry, inviting us to a safe place of refuge where we might see light through the darkness that surrounds us? How can we make sense of this incomprehensible world if not through the power of writing and reading?
I would like to invite you to dive into our inaugural issue, and prepare to be challenged, thrilled, inspired, and deeply touched. The poems and the prose in this issue not only break the traditional boundaries of form and style, but also explore the themes of self and society from a never-seen-before lens. From Whispers in the back of one’s mind to Words screaming for attention, you will find stunning creative work by writers of all backgrounds and ages – some who have never been published before, and some who have won the most prestigious awards. You will find authenticity and quality in all different forms whether it be a short captivating stanza or a gripping, powerful page of fiction. You will experience the wild and the divine, the eccentric and the experimental, breaking with narrow ideas and rapturing our notions of normality.
Art not only gives us a passport to the lives of others, to their passions, their courage, and their consciousness, but it is also a much-needed wakeup call to the drama of our moment; to here and to now. I sincerely hope that you will discover the struggles, the raw pain, and the piercing hopes and dreams in these pages and consequently feel enriched and empowered, for with vigor and resolve, with persistence and determination, we can take steps to shape the world around us.
Humbly,
Ashley Renselaer
