Sustenance
By A. R. Salandy
One often walks through the aisles
Of confectionary and processed joy
That is the grandiose markets
That now reside indoors unlike before
Where sugars and syrups
And chemicals galore
Fill the air with an aroma so enticing
That every chocolate coated memory-
Becomes a strange reality in the adult world
Of suburban vegetable shopping,
But in such a world one might find it
Just that bit more permissible
To indulge in the grotesque selection
Of a commodified candied delight
Where childhood glee
And carefree worry once existed
In the hearts of men and women
Who now drudge the inner markets-
In search of a new found happiness
Based only in the preservation
Of their existence
Rather than in the preservatives of foods-
That now bring caloric pressures dystopian.
