Taking Control

By Frank de Canio

You never took the driver’s seat
or ordered me to move aside
while you proceeded to complete
the turn I started, quick to guide
my Mustang off the beaten track.
You steered me through love’s underpass
while I agreed to take a back
seat to your skill and pump the gas.
And even though I picked up speed
to reassert my pride of place,
since I gave you my map to read
I’d cede it at a faster pace.
For they can make the tires squeal
whose hands are on the steering wheel.

Frank was born & bred in New Jersey, served his basic in Fort Dix and was graduated from Union Hill High School. He loves music from Bach to Amy Winehouse, and also hosts a philosophy café in lower Manhattan every other week.
